First Grade follows an emotional ride of several first-grade children and their parents across Thailand, from the fierce competition of the entrance exam to the last day of school.
First Grade follows the lives of several children from their first day at school to the last, an emotional journey filled with laughter and tears as they deal with daily obstacles and discover the true magic of being first-graders. The various school concepts are also explored, ranging from those held by the government through to alternative schools.
The film is an intimate portrait of our four main characters. Tee is a repeat first-grade student at a notorious school in Bangkok’s largest slum, with a high percentage of drop-outs. He is an energetic boy who has trouble focusing on his studies. He is the target of bullying by his peers and seniors at school.
Potter has recently moved down south with his mother, grandmother and younger sister from Chiangmai. His mother has just married a Muslim man. With difficulty, Potter has embarked on a new life at an Islamic school in Padang Besar, a border town near the Malaysian border.
Paween is a tribal boy attending a school near the Thai-Myanmar border in Chiangrai. Not only is the Thai language the main obstacle for him at school, but learning Chinese is mandatory for those hoping for a better life beyond the northern hills.
And Nut is at a boarding school 200 kilometers from Bangkok. It is a school with an emphasis on human values, inspired by the teachings of an Indian guru, Sai Baba. Not only will the children be explored, but also their parents and teachers, who are an important part of their learning experience.
