Her Breath

With trembling breaths, Kyeong-in, a woman with developmental disability, cheerfully recounts her life journey after leaving the institution.

Kyeong-in, who was forced to play the clarinet to survive as a “good girl” in an institution, and Inseo, who had to be responsible to take care of her brother with a developmental disability—two young women quickly become friends.
But in her supported housing, Kyeong-in is no longer allowed to play the clarinet. She often gets frustrated with the interference of support workers. “Where, with whom, and how should we live?” Inseo picks up her camera to follow Kyeong-in’s journey to build a community outside institutional boundaries.
But unlike Inseo’s expectations, Kyeong-in shares her dream of marriage and family. While Inseo feels burdened by her family, Kyeong-in feels the opposite—leaving the two unable to understand each other. Then one day, Kyeong-in suddenly faces the threat of losing her job, and gets hospitalized, stopping her from continuing her journey.
As discrimination continues to shake their lives, both women continue fighting to protect their everyday lives. A coming-of-age story of two women standing next to each other.
