Sisters In War

Two brave sisters turn away from their duty as daughters to fight against the military Junta along with thousands of their generation who dream of a democratic, ethnically diverse Myanmar.

Sisters in War is an observational feature documentary presented as a cinematic conversation between two sisters Nan Lone and Nyo Chaw, as they take up arms to defeat the military dictatorship in Myanmar. We will intimately walk with these sisters who offer insight into the many thousands of their generation Z who believe that an Independent, democratic and ethnically diverse Myanmar is possible.

As the conflict intensifies, Nan Lone and Nyo Chaw’s dreams of higher education beyond wartime lapse and they harden into their identities as soldiers. Nan Lone is elevated to deputy commander of the KNDF women’s battalion where she pushes for women to be allowed to go to the frontline. In parallel, Nyo Chaw, readjusts her wishes for medical school to lead the medical unit in Free Burma Rangers, a group known for treating all rebel soldiers regardless of ethnicity. Back home, societal pressures weigh on their parents, who in turn pressure their daughters to marry and return to homelife.
Told from an insiders lens, Sisters in War is an urgent, yet intimate family story set against the backdrop of a brutal dictatorship about a country where stories of hope and possibilities of justice are actively suppressed.
