A group of elderly lives in a basement beneath the bustling city of Taipei. Amid poverty, aging, and death, this cramped, decaying space sustains a resilient flow of life.
In one of Taipei’s bustling districts, a group of elderly people live in an underground dwelling rarely seen in the city. Once a traditional market, the space has been subdivided into small rental rooms, now housing elderly residents who live alone. Though each once lived in isolation, they gradually form an invisible bond。 They cook for one another, watch television together, and share daily routines that turn strangers into companions.
Regarded by neighbors as vagrants, they face sudden government inspections, bureaucratic barriers to welfare, strained relationships with their children, and the constant burden of illness.
One day, one of the residents, unable to care for himself due to severe illness, attempts suicide by turning on the gas. He is discovered just in time by his neighbors, preventing both a tragedy and a fire that could have engulfed the entire basement. However, he ultimately succumbs to cancer.
Despite death and ongoing threats to their living conditions, life continues. Residents move in and out, and routines persist. In this hidden corner of the city, life unfolds in quiet cycles, raising the ultimate question of whether this basement is not just a shelter, but the final stop in their lives.
