In Myanmar’s warzones and ethnic borderlands, where the medical system has collapsed, young women travel with only a backpack, risking their lives to attend births. The school that trains them sits across the border, in Thailand.

The 2021 coup ended their schooling and their future. In March 2026, carrying only a faint curiosity about midwifery and a thin hope, twenty-five of them arrive at a Thai border town.

A year of relentless training: classroom medicine, then the hospital — difficult labors, miscarriages, things no one can prepare you for. And the nights: laughing at nothing, quarreling, missing home so badly they cry into their pillows.

A year after,the girlishness gone from their faces, they say goodbye and return to a country still at war. A woman who fled airstrikes into the jungle goes into labor. They move at night, when the bombing thins, and prepare for the delivery by a single headlamp.

“Is this a world still worth being born into?”

This is not a story about heroes, but the record of twenty-five ordinary women who, with almost no choices, chose the one thing opposite to war — birth, love — and set out to turn despair into hope.
