In a collective re-imagining of a missing past, fractured memories of the Chinese-Vietnamese diaspora are weaved together to reclaim a silenced history
Set in Chợ Lớn, the world’s largest Chinatown, Whispers that Echo juxtaposes dreams of the past with intergenerational conversations about identity, migration, and silence to retrace the invisible legacies of Chinese-Vietnamese communities in Vietnam. Blurring vérité documentary with sensory experience, the film seeks to piece together silenced histories of loss, trauma, and displacement into a cohesive meditation on memory, belonging, and the possibility to heal together. In doing so it asks: How do we process pain that was never named? How do we reimagine what we didn’t even know was lost?
Felicia Chen, known artistically as Dis Fig, is a US-born, Berlin-based music producer and performer. Beginning from a personal exploration into her Chinese-Vietnamese heritage and personal family histories, Whispers That Echo is her inquiry into intergenerational trauma, cultural erasure, and the cathartic, healing power of film and sound.
Nathaniel Brown is a visual artist & filmmaker exploring the intersection of place, belonging, and community. His work has been supported by the Fulbright Foundation, the Pulitzer Center, the National Endowment of the Arts, and the Mellon Foundation; featured in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Vice, Nowness, Vogue, and Dazed; and shown at festivals including DOC NYC, Hawaii, Big Sky, and Cleveland.
Phạm Hoàng Miên is a Saigon-based writer and producer working across ethnography, documentary, and fiction to explore personal and collective traumas. Her practice focuses on the nuances of human connection, featuring collaborations with international platforms such as VICE and NOWNESS.
