Behind an Open Veil
by Ratrikala Bhre Aditya, Mandy Marahimin
Sudjojono is dubbed the father of Indonesian Modern Art. However, his life as a father and grandfather proves to be more complicated than known to the public eye.
Indonesian history records Sudjojono as one of the most influential artists.
Referred to as the Father of Indonesian Modern Art, he played a role in the struggle to founding the republic. He was one of the pioneers in the battle to liberate Indonesian art from the influence of other world styles. On his path to success, there are many hidden stories about him and his family.
Not many know that Sudjojono once fell in love with a sex worker and the woman’s painting is one of his key paintings; that he never really wanted to get into politics but later served as a member of the parliament under the Soeharto regime or that he was fired from the communist party that later saved his life; or that he, who was known to be a man of great respect for women, was, in the end, the same man who asked his wife to be allowed to have another wife.
Behind an Open Veil wants to reveal the details of his life from the point of view of a grandson who idolises him but has deep disappointment over his life decisions that affect his family.
