Moon Is Watching You

Moon Is Watching You

The film looks at the global struggle for democracy and the sense of loss faced by Hong Kong people today. “Don’t be afraid. The moon will show the way home.”

MOON IS WATCHING YOU reflects on the 2019 anti-extradition movement, a collective trauma for many Hongkongers. Friends, students, and citizens who once fought for freedom are now imprisoned or in exile. Tyranny abruptly strips away what we take for granted, creating a “loss” that is hard to process. Five years later, I reflect on global struggles for democracy and the urgency of managing this loss for today’s Hongkongers.

The film invites a return: to childhood, gathering fragments to piece together a family album; to the streets, paying homage and comforting departed souls; to the battlefield, confronting burning ashes; to the bridge and roads, seeing the gray shades of humanity between black and white; and to the river, condensing this cinematic journey into memories for the future. Revisiting recordings of 2019 is like entering a forbidden space. Co-Writing with a poet, I attempt to follow the concept of “Open Text,” distilling complex social events into profound memories to help people settle emotions. “Don’t be afraid. The moon will show us the way home.”
