A tiny grocery store in the Taiwanese mountains has been the centre stage of a romantic love story between an indigenous Paiwan princess and an exiled Chinese soldier.
“Wind and View” is a story about an elderly couple running a grocery store called, roughly translated, “Landscape Store”. 98-year-old Grandpa Kang was born in Northern China and spent his youth in the scourge of war. He was caught by the Allied Forces during the Korean War, after which he was brought to Taiwan as a prisoner of war. Deep in the mountains of Taiwan Grandpa Kang met Grand ’Eleng, an indigenous princess from the Paiwan tribe. They got married and for over 60 years, they’ve been running the little Landscape Store together; although they don’t speak the same language. Grandpa Kang speaks Mandarin with a strong Northern accent and Grandma ‘Eleng speaks Pinayuanan (Paiwan language).
Soon, their Grandson, Kang Yuan-Jin, will be succeeding Grandma ‘Eleng as the next chief of the tribe. He is devoted to keeping traditional Paiwan culture alive while also preparing for his upcoming wedding, propelling him to revisit his grandparents’ love story and to ask them about their past and look for answers to questions of heritage, identity and the future of their tribe.
